Striking contrasts in the terrain occur in Nebraska's Panhandle, where grasslands give way to towering landmarks and the prairies turn into mountains. Pioneer wagontrains traveling along the Mormon and Oregon Trails got a scenic reprieve from the monotony of the prairie as they came into view of monuments such as Chimney Rock and obstacles like Scotts Bluff.

Today those same trails are popular outdoor destinations for bicyclists and hikers, and western Nebraska in general is a great getaway for campers and RVers. Besides the trails and rock monuments, adventurers can canoe and fish the North Platte River and visit the numerous state parks and lakes in the area, which offer opportunities for boating, water skiing, swimming, fishing, and observing wildlife.
