The Bottom Line

SPOT is a personal location device. Since it uses 100% satellite technology, SPOT works where cell phones don't. SPOT provides four functions: alert 9-1-1, call for HELP, location check in and progress tracking. Annual service subscriptions are required to activate SPOT. For foreign travel, backcountry excursions, hiking and climbing, add peace of mind to your trip with a SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker. To the average person, I would suggest avoiding circumstances where you might need SPOT. To the outdoor adventurer, this could be a life-saving piece of equipment.

Guide Review - SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker

When I received my SPOT unit, I installed the 2 AA Lithium batteries that were included. Instructions say to only use Lithium batteries. I guess that is because they last longer. Next, I registered my unit online and acquired a service subscription. I had an opportunity to create a HELP message, a check in message and a contact list. When HELP or check in is activated on the SPOT unit, these messages will be emailed or text messaged to the people that you list here. You can send unlimited messages with your subscription. If you want to save and record your trip progress, there is an additional annual service fee. When SPOT sends any message, it includes a link to Google Maps™ with your sending location displayed. This is a great feature. I tested out the HELP and check in features at various locations and weather conditions (clear, cloudy, snow), and SPOT delivered my messages promptly in all cases.

A word of caution, do not test the 9-1-1 function, only use it in case of a real emergency. Based on your location, appropriate emergency personnel will be dispatched to rescue you, and you will be liable for all costs associated with that rescue. Insurance for these rescue costs is available on the SPOT Web site.

Things I found lacking in SPOT. SPOT transmits your location, but it doesn't tell you what it is. SPOT does not replace a cell phone, compass, GPS unit or weather radio. SPOT is a nice enhancement to your survival kit, but you still need all the other gadgets too.

Much cheaper than current beacon locators, SPOT is available at REI and Cabela's for $149.99.
